Between 2018 and 2021, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) received a total of 27,291 charges alleging sexual harassment. Nearly 80% of these sexual harassment charges were filed by women and 44% of these were concurrently filed with a retaliation charge. Over this 4-year period, the EEOC recovered nearly $300 million for individuals with sexual harassment claims through resolved charge receipts and in litigation.
Over the past 20 years, researchers have accumulated a large body of evidence linking sexual harassment to a wide range of both physical as well as mental disorders. These studies have shown that women who experienced the trauma of sexual harassment were more likely to have high blood pressure, insomnia, depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Victims of sexual harassment also often experience a reduced quality of life due to diminished self-esteem and self-confidence.
