Diagnostic colonoscopy is an endoscopic procedure used for examination of the large bowel and the distal segment of the small bowel with a fiber optic camera on a flexible tube passed through the anus. Colonoscopies are most often used to screen for colorectal cancer but are also frequently used to diagnose inflammatory bowel disease. About 15 million colonoscopies are performed in the U.S. annually, primarily in adults between the ages of 50 to 75 years.

Although early detection of colorectal cancer can lead to earlier treatment and, thereby, reduce mortality, it is well recognized that screening colonoscopy carries the risk of potentially serious complications. In general, the most serious complication is intestinal perforation which is a life-threatening medical emergency. The rate of colon perforation during screening colonoscopy is estimated to be about 1 in 2,000 procedures. Once an iatrogenic colonoscopic perforation occurs, prompt recognition and urgent treatment is necessary to prevent the onset of sepsis and its potentially lethal consequences.
