Personal injury lawyers commonly encounter clients who suffer with frequent headaches after sustaining a traumatic injury to the head or neck region. These headaches, the severity of which can range from mild to severe, are known in the literature as post-traumatic headaches. The most common mechanisms of injury that can trigger post-traumatic headaches include motor vehicle accidents, assaults, falls, and sports-related concussions. In a majority of cases, headaches develop within 2-weeks after the injury, but some patients may not experience headaches until several months after the trauma. Although several studies have shown that post-traumatic headaches typically resolve within 3-months after an injury, in a significant minority of cases, the headaches can persist much longer.

The two most common types of post-traumatic headaches are tension headaches that are mild to moderate in intensity that may be episodic or occur daily and migraine headaches that are moderate to severe in intensity and may be associated with nausea and vomiting or light and sound sensitivity. Since post-traumatic headaches are frequently associated with a mild traumatic brain injury, many patients also experience other post-concussion symptoms such as dizziness, ringing in the ears, memory difficulties, sleep disturbances, and anxiety. Treatment of post-traumatic headaches and its associated symptoms may include medications, physical therapy, and relaxation training or biofeedback. Persistent post-traumatic headaches can often be disabling because they interfere with activities of daily living and many patients experience difficulty in their home and work life.
